Violet Alice Mohr, age 101, of Fridley, MN, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2014, from the long term effects of Alzheimer's disease. She has gone to spend eternity in the Lord's hands with her husband, Wilbur "Bud", her parents Minnie and Herbert, and her siblings Myrtle and Lester. Violet is survived by her sister Florence; her son Dennis (Shirley) and her daughters Marlyse (Elmer) Lee, Carole (Norbert) Pirri; and Donna West; grandchildren Randy (Linda), Rosanne, Erika (Steve), Michael (Patrice), Christopher, and Kimberley; great-grandchildren Seth (Jenae), Nikki, Kyle, Heather (Joe), Scott, Ashley, Brandon, Austin, Eric (Angela), Lea, Thomas, and Olivia; and seven great-great grandchildren.
Born and raised in Tracy, MN, Violet "Vi" earned her teaching certificate at the Minnesota State Normal School in Marshall. She met Bud while teaching his three siblings and many other children at the Eight Corner School. After a long courtship, Bud and Vi were married in Sioux Falls, SD, since at the time (1939) there was no waiting period in South Dakota but there was one in Minnesota. Bud and Vi lived in Franklin, MN, when their son Dennis was born; then moved to St. Paul, MN, where their three daughters were born. Vi stayed home with the children until her youngest daughter, Donna, started school.
Vi returned to work, starting out as a clerk in the Minnesota State Taxation Department, followed by several years with the Minnesota State Highway Department. Vi and Bud enjoyed an active life with their many friends and family, picnics at Como Park, and later car camping became their passion. After their retirements in the early 1970s, Bud and Vi moved to a cabin on Lake Shetek in southern Minnesota, where they lived in the summer, and Mission, TX, where they lived in the winter. Bud and Vi spent their time enjoying hobbies such as fishing and playing cards and visiting family.
A few years after Bud's death in 1975, Vi moved to Texas permanently, along with her daughter Donna and her poodle Oscar. Vi's later years in Texas were spent in companionship with Grady Martin. Vi lived in Texas for 26 years before she became too ill with Alzheimer's and the children brought her back to Minnesota.
Vi loved to crochet and sew. She made many of her own clothes and taught her daughters to sew on a treadle sewing machine. She made countless doilies and afghans through the years, many of which are now in her children and grandchildren's homes. She wasn't much of a cook and her sons-in-law have fond memories of various cooking mishaps when she insisted on making them dinner. Although Vi always made healthy choices, never smoking or drinking, her one vice was chocolate. In her last years, her favorite food was chocolate pie, and more chocolate pie.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Lynwood Golden Living Center for their many years of caring for Violet.
Memorial service on Friday, December 26, 2014, at 10 AM at Miller Funeral Home in Fridley with visitation beginning at 9 AM. Violet will be interred next to Bud at Tracy City Cemetery, Tracy, MN.
