Toma(TM)s many contributions to the community are evident.
As a retired physician of Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) and Hennepin Faculty Associates (HFA) in Minneapolis, Tom will be dearly missed by many colleagues as well as friends. He started his internal medicine residency training at HCMC in 1968 and was chief resident for one year. He was inducted as an officer into the US Army Medical Corp. in 1969, stationed at Edgewood Arsenal in Baltimore, Maryland and was honorably discharged in 1972. He returned to Hennepin County Medical Center in 1972, finishing his residency and working at Pilot City Health Center in Minneapolis prior to beginning his Rheumatology practice in 1977. He served as the Division Director of Rheumatology from 1979-1983. In 1982, he became the Deputy Medical Director and Associate Medical Director for Ambulatory Care. In 1992, he was appointed Director of Primary Care Outreach Program at HCMC, spending much of his time off-campus at the Hennepin Care North Clinic and Hennepin Care South Clinic. He served on a number of committees and boards including the HFA Board, HFA Finance Committee, the University of Minnesota Undergraduate Medical Education Committee, and HCMC Executive Committee, while also serving at the Medical School as an adjunct professor. He was active in many organizations including the American College of Rheumatology, Minnesota Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, American College of Physicians, Hennepin County Medical Society, and the Minneapolis Society of Internal Medicine. He retired from HCMC/HFA and the University of Minnesota in 2008. He contributed greatly, over many years, as a superb physician, a fine teacher, and as a senior leader.
Tom also served as secretary/treasurer of the Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation, the research arm of HCMC, from 1999-2008. His signature contribution was leading by example though his unwavering commitment to his patients and the health of their community. His wise counsel and steady hand provided leadership and direction to the Research Foundation through challenging times and helped to maintain a vigorous and patient-centered research effort. The traditions of caring, common sense and excellence which he helped to establish will continue to guide coming generations of physicians and scientists.
As Medical Director for Hennepin Care North (HCN), he and his staff worked tirelessly to create a clinic where a diverse population living in northern Hennepin County could receive outstanding patient care. Within 7 years of opening of HCN, Hennepin Care South was opened in Richfield and HCN merged with Community Health's Women & Childrena(TM)s Clinic. He provided numerous seminars in the community for patients to learn more about arthritis and how it could impact their lives. He left a rich legacy as a noted healer, teacher, and physician. He was a mentor, a friend and a coach. "He was ours and we were his... together we were Hennepin Care Clinics."
Tom was also involved in the construction and oversight of the North Suburban Civic Center in Blaine, which later became Fogerty Arena. He served on the Arenaa(TM)s Board of Directors from 1986-2010. Through the years, his calm and capable leadership established him as a well-respected and influential voice. While serving the board, he worked tirelessly with judges, lawyers, surveyors, and pipefitters, treating them all with equal respect and esteem. Tom was extremely proud of "The Ice House;" he was one of a very small group of individuals who were responsible for the facilitya(TM)s extraordinary success and he will be deeply missed.
