Shirley Almer

Shirley B. Almer, age 84, of Big Lake passed away peacefully on September 28, 2023, at Mercy Hospital - Unity Campus in Fridley.

Shirley was born on September 21, 1939, to Victor and Edna Benning in Mankato. She graduated from Technical High School in St. Cloud in 1957. Shirley then went on to beauty school and worked as a hair stylist for many years. Shirley then went to work for Pacific Bell, AT&T and Target in her retirement years. Shirley married the love her life, James "Jim" Almer, on February 14, 1959 in St. Cloud. Shirley was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother.

Shirley's greatest joy was her family, we all benefited from the love she showed us. She loved a good cup of coffee, enjoyed watching the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins games. Shirley also enjoyed watching her kids, grandkids and great grandkids in their various activities and sports. Shirley was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need - her spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew her.

Survived by daughter, Terri (Almer) Johnson; sisters, Delores Storms, Vicki Rhoades, Susan Carmichael, and Joyce Larsen; brothers, Alan Benning, Floyd Benning, Monte Benning, and Steve Benning; grandchildren, Corey Almer, Nicci Almer, Aly Almer, TJ Almer and Theresa Wallin; great grandchildren, Calvin Almer, Colby Almer, Carly Almer, Abby Almer, Kinley Almer, Jacob Morse, Parker Morse, Benjamin Morse and Harrison Wallin.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Edna Benning; husband, James Almer; sons, Todd and James Jr.; and grandson, Ryan Almer.

Visitation and celebration of life will be held Saturday, October 7 at 1:00 pm with a service at 2:00 pm. fellowship to follow service all at Miller Funeral Home in Fridley, 763-571-1300. A private family burial will be at a later date.
