Roy Maki

February 8, 1925 — August 29, 2019

New Hope

Maki, Roy Edward, 94, New Hope, longtime Crystal resident, passed away peacefully, Thursday, August 29, 2019.  Roy was born in Minneapolis to Gust and Hilda Maki on February 8, 1925.  His parents were Finnish immigrants, and he was very proud of being an American of Finnish descent.  He lived in the Glenwood Avenue area of Minneapolis until 1965, when he and his family moved to Crystal.  He married Patricia Crute in June 1952.  They were married 66 years until Patricia passed away on March 19, 2018.  They had three children and two grandchildren.
Roy worked in the bottle house of Grain Belt brewery, then worked in the Grain Elevators at Fleishmann Malting, later ADM, until he retired in 1987.
Roy was a lifelong Democrat and Union member.  He was a proud Navy Veteran, serving in the Pacific during WWII, receiving a Purple Heart.  Roy enjoyed telling stories of his adventures during the war.
He loved his family, friends, black coffee, making people laugh, and Minnesota sports, particularly the Vikings, Twins, Gophers and the Lynx.  He liked walking, driving, watching the news, activities with family and friends, reading the newspaper, golfing and fishing.
Roy felt that his wife Pat’s good caregiving skills and his 22 winters in Mesa, Arizona, contributed to his long life.
Roy was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister Martha, brothers Delvin and Daisto, in laws, other family and many friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Leanne Hebl (Richard), son, Roy Kevin Maki (Susanne Miller), son Michael (Denise) Maki, grandchildren, Christine Hebl and William Hebl  (Kirstine Sand), other relatives, friends and caregivers.
Roy’s family is especially grateful for the loving care he received at St Therese Nursing Home of New Hope during the past eighteen months.  And for the special care he received from the visiting North Memorial Hospice Team during the last six months.  Both groups cared for him and our family with great compassion.
Roy and Patricia will be interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Friday, September 13, 2019, 12:30PM SHARP, Lane 4.
Memorials preferred to North Memorial Hospice.
Roy was a genuinely good man in every way and he will be missed.
Dad, you’ll always be our hero.
