Richard Albert Palmer, known to many as "Rich," passed away at the age of 82 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Born in Huron, South Dakota, on February 14, 1942, Rich led a life filled with dedication to his family, service to his Country, and a variety of passions and accomplishments.

After proudly enlisting in the United States Army, his draft number was called and the military police went to his house thinking he was dodging the draft.  Little did the MP realize that Rich was already down south doing his basic training in the Heavy Artillery Division, as he voluntarily enlisted before his draft was called. Rich served his country during the Vietnam War, stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and did his tour of duty on the front lines of South Vietnam from October 1965 through October 1966. His commitment to service extended beyond the military as he volunteered as a probation officer with the Anoka County Juvenile Court System and served as an usher at St. Philips Lutheran Church for many years. Additionally, Rich was deeply involved in shaping the lives of young individuals as a Cub/Boy Scout leader.

In his professional life, Rich began as a Journeyman Carpenter following his military service and later became a Bridge & Building Foreman with The Soo Line Railroad and then by Canadian Pacific Railroad when they purchased The Soo Line. Despite dropping out of high school earlier in life, he went back to complete his high school diploma, demonstrating his perseverance and commitment to personal growth.

Rich's interests were varied and enriched his life greatly. He found joy in grouse hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, trains, traveling and yardwork. For over 45 years, Rich lovingly took care of an adopted fire hydrant across the street from his house—an act that symbolized his devotion and sense of responsibility.

Above all else, Rich cherished spending time with his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength that will be carried on by his surviving family members: his loving wife of 56 years and 6 months, Olga Louise Palmer (Young), their beloved children Sarah Kmetetz (spouse Matt), Mary Mirtica (spouse Eric), and David Palmer (significant other Stephanie Myers). Rich's grandchildren—LeeAnne Kmetetz, Scott Shogren, Jeff Shogren, Jonathan Olson, Thomas Shogren, and Jacob Palmer.
3 nephews & their families, and many other extended family members—who will always remember him fondly.

In addition to his surviving family members mentioned above, Rich is reunited in heaven with his parents, Olga's parents Earl & Agnes Young, nephew Eric Young, many of his siblings, and other loved ones. His quiet demeanor paired with unwavering dedication will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rich departed this world at 7pm on Friday, March 22nd but leaves behind memories that will remain forever etched in the hearts of those who knew him. A man of few words with a big heart—Rich's presence will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for generations to come.
