The Rev. Gerhard (Gary) Carl Galchutt, STM, went home to be with Jesus, his Savior, on July 5, 2011. Born May 14, 1933 in Zion Lutheran parsonage of Green Isle-Arlington, MN, he was baptized at Zion on May 28, 1933. He attended Concordia College St. Paul and Concordia Seminary St. Louis highlighted by a year at Oberursel Lutheran Seminary in Germany.
Gary was ordained on June 18, 1961 and was installed as missionary-at-large for the Northern Illinois District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. He was the first pastor of Faith Lutheran-Geneva, IL. Gary completed chaplaincy training and began work at St. Paul Ramsey Hospital in 1964, later becoming director of chaplaincy. Gary wed Adeline Wagner on August 19, 1967. In 1982, Gary accepted a call to parish ministry at Peace Lutheran-Hutchinson, MN. In 1986, Gary was installed as pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran-Spring Lake Park, MN and served there until his 1996 retirement. Then Gary served as chaplain at Roseville Good Samaritan Home and as vacancy pastor at Concordia Lutheran in Fairhaven, MN. God gifted Gary with a deep love of sharing the gospel.
An enthusiast of travel, cinema and photography of family and friends, Gary was also known for his interest in church and family history. He delighted in expecting another grandchild in the fall. Blessed for having shared his life are children, Rachel (the Rev. Michael) Henrichs, Dr. Kathryn Galchutt, Steven, David (Keri), the Rev. Daniel (Melissa); grandchildren, Caleb, Mary, Alison, Benjamin, & Isaac; sisters-in-law, Carol Galchutt, Carolyn and Janice Wagner, Dorothy (Chip) Sutton; brothers-in-law, Harold (Avis) and Roland and Daniel Wagner; and cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Gary was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Adeline; parents, George and Ida (Reuter); sister, Eleanor; brother, Kenneth; in-laws, Robert, Richard and Maryls Wagner.
Funeral service Tuesday 11AM at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 4101 Washington St. NE, Columbia Heights (763-788-9427). Visitation Monday, 4-7 PM at Miller Funeral Home, 6210 HWY 65 NE, Fridley and one hour prior to service at the church. Following church luncheon, interment Lakewood Cemetery, Mpls.
