Nancy McCarron

November 17, 1936 — November 8, 2014

Nancy Jane Polson was born in North Minneapolis elder of 2 daughters to Lloyd & Ethel Polson. Growing up her best friend was cousin Geri. Nancy went to North High School while Geri went to Patrick Henry. Nancy helped Geri elope
Geri started wearing layers of clothes to school, peeling off the extra layers of clothes at Nancy's house. Nancy helped Geri pack the clothes together, go to the bus station and meet her boyfriend Fred in southern U.S. to merry while he was in the Army. Geri's dad did not approve and said the marriage would not last. Fred and Geri are still married and remain life-long friends despite her dad's prediction.
Nancy met John coming home from her job at Radio City Theater in downtown Minneapolis. A mutual friend, Patti D asked John to go with her to the bus stop to walk her friend Nancy home. Her sister Susan knew her first but she was nine years younger. Nancy and John dated for two years before they married at the age of twenty in 1957. The sparks flew even then because they had three children in the first four years of marriage. John remembers the three kids were all in diapers at the same time.
Nancy was a stay at home mother for many years developing a passion for shopping that continued throughout the rest of her life. Her children recall grocery trips to at least three stores and the bakery on Wednesday.
Nancy and John loved to spend vacations at a family cabin owned by her parents. Those days were the "Grand vacation" for many years, after forays to the local towns and state parks the family would return to the cabin for swimming and fun in the lake and then have supper from the best of the local food. Card and board games were played every night since television reception was poor. Nancy loved her long swims while John would keep an eye on the kids and drown some worms.
Eventually Nancy returned to the work force doing food demonstrations at several malls. She also learned to drive with the help of a driving school. John said she made him too nervous to tell her the fine points. The school was helpful, she later helped her own children learn and practice. While her children went to high school and left home she sold insurance and worked as a job counselor, later she worked in the claims department at Lutheran Brotherhood, they kept her busy but she especially enjoyed the people she worked with.
John and Nancy lived in Brooklyn Park where Nancy had many friends among the neighbors, sharing recipes, stories or food was common happenings.
Surgery in 1999 made it difficult to return to work, but by retiring at this time Nancy regained health allowing her to work hard on her Bennie Baby collection. The Red Hat social group also interested her; the group provided a new circle of friends and a chance for fun outings and dressing up. Men were not usually included.
Nancy and John went on several trips in the next few years to such places as the North Shore, Hawaii, Alaska on a cruise, and an East Coast bus trip. New faces and places were something John and Nancy enjoyed. The last trip they enjoyed was a timeshare in Wisconsin. They were accompanied by her sister Susan and their eldest Son Sean and his wife Grace.
Quieter moments found Nancy reading mysteries by Patricia Cornwell, J.A. Jance, and Michel Connelly, checking out cookbooks, and watching television programs featuring mysteries or cooking or sometimes both at the same time. Through the years she would read late at night to the wee hours even if she worked or had plans the next day.
Her family recalls great meals she would come up with as well as "tuna mousse". She tried to make an ordinary meal special in some way for her family of 2 or 20. A smile and a laugh was her signature recipe.
Nancy had difficulty with her health for many years that multiplied this last year. A granddaughter became engaged this summer. In September Nancy participated in helping this granddaughter select her wedding dress at a local bridal shop. Nancy really enjoyed whatever outing she could go with family and friends.
She leaves us with many happy memories and love.
