Merlin L. Hanson, aged 89, of New Brighton, passed away on November 22, 2017. He was born on February 19, 1928 in Egan, South Dakota to Eva (Stinson) and Gilbert Hanson. He grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he served as a radio engineering instructor. He moved to Sioux City, Iowa and married Beverly Barrett in 1954. In 1957 he moved to the Twin Cities and worked at Sperry Rand Corporation for many years as a computer design engineer until his retirement. He authored and co-authored a number of computer engineering articles for peer reviewed academic engineering journals, and had six separate patents with the United States Government. He served as a professor and taught computer programming for a number of years at a local college.
He is survived by his daughter Dawn (Robin) Gereau of Kissimmee, FL; grandsons Jason (Lucia) Gereau of Orlando, FL and Joshua Gereau of Kissimmee, FL; sister, Shirley Kalb of Hatboro, PA; one niece, and four nephews.
Inurnment will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
