Marlene M. Richter
Marlene was born in Granton, Wisconsin in 1937, the only child of Wilbur and Natalia Schlinsog. As a youth, she left the farm and moved to Marshfield, Wisconsin, having vowed never to marry a farmer. At the age of 19, she met David Richter in a tavern. She was having pizza with friends and sitting by the juke box. David asked Marlene to play a song they could dance to. She selected, "See you later, Alligator." She did see David again, and because Marlene's mother did not want her to be a teenage bride, she waited to marry him on June 15, 1957, a week after her 20th birthday. David and Marlene just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this year.
In Marshfield, Marlene and David loved to spend time with family and to dance, visiting several of the local ballrooms in the area, including the Silverdome. Two years after they married, they gave birth to son Bradley in 1959. After Brad was born, the family moved to Park Falls, Wisconsin, where David worked as an accountant. There, in 1963, they gave birth to son Scott. Eventually, a job offer brought them to Fridley where David began to work for Schaper Manufacturing, which made the popular Cootie toys.
Marlene cared for Brad and Scott and later opened a day care in their home. She took care of many children over the years. A big reunion of all the kids Marlene cared for was held in honor of her 50th birthday.
Her love of children eventually brought her to Hayes Elementary School, where she was the health aide for 19 years. Even after she retired, she continued to sub for other health aides in Fridley's elementary, middle, and high schools. Marlene had a keen sense of knowing when kids needed her help and when they simply needed to get back to the classroom because they were faking it.
She was a terrific mother-in-law to Leslie McAfee Richter and Darcy Richter and aunt to Jeffrey Bores and Michael Hawkins. She was the proud and loving grandmother to the children of Brad and Leslie, Bryce (25) and Linley (23); and to Scott's children, Kelsie (25), Kendra (19), and Zackary (18); and great-grandmother to Kelsie's daughter, Olivia (6 months). She had Christmas and Easter traditions with her grandchildren that involved cookie decorating and dying Easter eggs.
She enjoyed her family and spending time at the cabin in Tony, Wisconsin (which she and David owned with David's sister, Lugene Bores, and her husband Donald), laughing and telling stories, going to garage sales, cooking, baking, and making crafts. At the cabin, she liked playing games, including marbles (a "Sorry"-type board game played on a board made by her father) and cards (particularly cribbage and Schmier, learning early you never bid three on an Ace Jack). A loss might be greeted by a "Kiss my nose!" remark from Marlene. Although, she was afraid of the water, she did enjoy a slow drive around the lake on the pontoon after dinner to look at the other properties. She was a wonderful cook and baker, and always brought Rice Krispie bars, brownies, and cinnamon rolls to the cabin. Spring was time for her famous rhubarb custard cake, and she made zucchini cake in the summer.
Marlene was also the family archivist. She kept a journal of the comings and goings at the cabin. The many photo albums of family members and trips she and David took (including Germany and Australia and New Zealand) speak volumes about the fun life experiences she had.
Marlene was a terrific friend to so many people. Her friendship groups included teachers and staff at the school, her homemakers club (and earlier the Welcome Wagon), and neighbors. Despite her many surgeries in the last four years, Marlene tried to keep going to as many luncheons as she could with friends. Staying connected was important to her.
Marlene is also survived by daughters-in-law Leslie and Darcy, and her only nephew Jeffrey Bores.
She will be remembered as a caring and loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and good friend. Here is one of her favorite family recipes. Remember her when you make it. It would make her happy.
