Joan Monica Zuk (nee Simon)
Joan, age 90, of Fridley, MN passed away peacefully on September 15, 2023 at home with family. Joan grew up in New Prague, MN, went to nursing school at St. Mary's Hospital and graduated in 1953. She married Carl Zuk in 1958 (65 years!) She was a devout Catholic and a member of the Church of St. William in Fridley for 60 years. She was a woman of immense love, compassion and faith leaving behind a legacy that will be forever cherished by all of us who knew her. Our lives have been shaped by her wisdom and love.
Joan's greatest joy in life was her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Monica (Janda) Simon of New Prague, two brothers, John and Ron; brother-in-law, Jack Schoffman, and her beloved daughter, Margaret. She is survived by her loving husband, Carl, and her surviving children, Elizabeth Powell (Dave), and David Zuk (Lisa) as well as her grandchildren, Joseph Powell (Amanda), Jake Powell (Hannah), Grace Powell Stanford (Tripp), Dawson Powell, Wyatt Zuk (Kelsey), Samantha Zuk and Dylan Zuk; and great grandchildren, Powell Stanford and Ewan Powell. Her siblings, Monica Zabrocki (Al), Cathy Schoffman, and Marty Simon (Nancy); sister-in-laws, Janice Simon and Evelyn Simon. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and treasured friends.
Joan always had a smile on her face. She loved traveling with Carl in the earlier years of their retirement. They returned to Maine (Carl's home) consistently throughout her life and made many wonderful family memories. They spent a lot of time visiting their grandkids and going to all of their school and sporting events. She spent a lot of time laughing and talking on the phone, planning family events or sharing recipes and catching up. She could chat about anything! She always had so much energy, just like her mother, Grandma Simon. So many great memories in Grandma Simon's kitchen. Joan loved gardening and being outside. Doing the cryptoquip puzzles in the paper. Spending time with her grandkids. Even in the later years, when things became more difficult, she always kept a great attitude of joy and found reasons to smile! We will all miss her.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to SACA Food Shelf in Columbia Heights, MN.
She is to be cremated. There will be a Mass at St. Williams Catholic Church in Fridley MN on Friday, October 13, 2023 at 10:00 am.
