Jeanette Flanders, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2024, in Fridley, MN, just a day shy of her 93rd birthday. Born on September 17, 1931, in Austin, MN, she lived a life rich in love, faith, and cherished memories.
Jeanette was a steadfast employee of AT&T, where she devoted many years in various roles including receptionist, clerk, bookkeeper, and secretary. Her career began as a telephone operator at Bell Telephone Company, and included a significant period as a nurses aide at St. Olaf Hospital in Austin. During her professional journey, she was a member of the labor union, the AT&T Communications Workers of America. Her tenacity and dedication in the workplace were only matched by her warmth and compassion for her family and friends.
In her personal life, Jeanette embodied kindness and a loving spirit. She was celebrated not only as a devoted wife but also as a cherished mother and grandmother. Survived by her beloved husband of 72 years, Alvin Flanders, her legacy continues through their daughters Juli Segerstrom (Bruce Segerstrom) and Kim Flanders, alongside four grandchildren and their families.
Jeanette's past was adorned with treasured memories. One heartwarming recollection comes from her husband, Alvin, who fondly remembers seeing her at a dance hall in Austin called “The Prom.” Their shared joy during a time of youthful innocence blossomed into a bond that lasted a lifetime. Jeanette often reflected on their delightful moments together, recalling how she watched Alvin fixing radios in hospital rooms during his work as an electrician.
Her personality radiated with a great sense of humor and a heartfelt desire to help others, making her the cornerstone for many in need of support. She actively volunteered as a Candy Striper at Unity Hospital, served as a room mother at Rice Creek Elementary, and played an instrumental role in her community at Saint Timothy's Lutheran Church in Columbia Heights, where she was one of the first members. Her spirit of giving was evident when she brought a TV to the school to watch the astronauts land on the moon, or when she arranged for Christmas trees to bring cheer to her daughter’s classroom.
Jeanette's interests were as lively as her spirit. She delighted in the thrill of playing the One Armed Bandit at Hinckley Grand Casino and cherished moments spent dining with family at Perkins and Ol’ Country Buffet. Trips to Las Vegas brought her eyes to the lights of the Strip, nights filled with laughter, delicious food, and exhilarating shows alongside Alvin. Her love for singing brought joy not just to her, but to everyone lucky enough to hear her.
Despite her declining health in recent years, Jeanette remained steadfast in her faith in Jesus Christ and was uplifted by the fervent prayers of those who loved her. As she transitioned into eternal peace, she left behind a legacy of unwavering love and belief that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Jeanette is preceded in death by her foster parents, Martha and Ferdinand Schreiber, her sister Irene Bauer, and brother Wally Schreiber. Her life was a testament to faith, family, and dedication, and those who were fortunate enough to know her will carry her spirit with them always.
A visitation for Jeanette will be held on September 26, 2024, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 AM at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church, located at 825 51st Ave NE, Columbia Heights, MN. An additional visitation will follow from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Jeanette will then be interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN, at 1:30 PM.
