James was born in Brooten, Minnesota to John and Harriet McFarlane. James Alan McFarlane was one of four children. Having lost his father at age eight, Jim became very close with all of his siblings and helped raise them. His mother then remarried to Harry Mithun and together they had five children, growing their family to eleven.
Jim loved playing football at Shakopee High school before meeting his wife of 12 years, Linda Lee Plaster. Soon after the wedding, Jim got drafted into the Vietnam War and was sent to Germany where he served as a Communications Liaison. In July of 1968, Jim rushed back to the states because his wife was having their first child, James Junior McFarlane. There were complications however, and James Jr. is now buried at Fort Snelling Cemetery and will reside next to his father there.
After being honorably discharged from the war, Jim found a job as a butcher in St. Paul which he did for many years. Jim had three more children during his marriage to Linda Lee; Katherine Stachowoski, Holly McFarlane, and Kenneth McFarlane. Jim was an avid hunter and fisher. He also loved to play poker and cribbage with his family and friends.
After his divorce in 1979, Jim worked as a carpenter building homes. He was later introduced to Mary Drivdahl by his sisters and they started a loving relationship. He helped raise her son Casey Drivdahl and together they had a son, Joseph McFarlane. In his later years, Jim took an avid interest in old cars as well as had a love of animals.
Jim loved his family; especially all of his 6 grandchildren; Krystopher, Joseph, Mindy, Shawn, MicKina and Rianna. Nothing made him happier than to hold his baby grandkids. Jim was a very generous man and would give you the shirt off his back. He was always there for people when they needed him and he will be dearly missed.
