Gary "Red" Patrick Phillips, age 70 of Fridley, passed away unexpectedly on Oct 29, 2020. Preceded in death by parents, Jack and Audrey Phillips; and Patricia M. Phillips. Survived by children, Shawn Phillips (Sarah), Shanon (Kip) Hasselfeldt, Michael (Rebecca) Phillips; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Nathan, Ellie, Emily, Everly, Lucas and Lincoln; step daughter, Sheron (Russ) Peterson; siblings, Katherine (Sam) Rodriguez, Patricia A. Phillips, Jon (Diane) Phillips, James (Julie) Phillips and Steven (Anna) Phillips; uncle & aunt, Larry and Carol Oakes; beloved friend, Rose Tiessen; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and hundreds and hundreds of friends. Gary grew up in Fridley where he owned and operated Northeast Towing for 45 years. He helped thousands of motorists over the years, endearing himself to anyone who needed a helping hand. He was a fixture in the city of Fridley and part of Fridley's history will be lost with his passing. Gary loved the outdoors, nature, deer hunting, and racing. He took great pride watching his son, Shawn, race and being a part of the pit crew. Lovingly known as "Papa Red" by his grandchildren (who will miss their special trips to the corner store), Gary was a proud father and grandfather, leaving a legacy that will not be forgotten. The memories shared with him will forever be a blessing. Due to Covid-19, a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
