Elder Lindahl

Elder M. Lindahl

Elder was born April 5, 1926 in Iron River, Michigan to Harold and Martha Lindahl. He graduated from North Park College (A.A.), Michigan State University (B.A.), North Park Theological Seminary (B.DIV.), the University of Michigan (M.A.), and Northwestern University (Ph.D.). On August 5, 1950 he married Muriel Johnson at First Covenant Church in Chicago. They were married for 62 years.

Most of his life he lived in the North Park community in Chicago where he and Muriel raised their family. They have four children: Kristine, Wesley, Paul and Renee. Their family has grown to include 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Elder served in the Army in Germany and Austria during World War II in the 135th Combat Engineer Battalion and the 485th Engineer Heavy Shop Company. He wrote about his experiences as an 18 year old in his book, Private Lindahl, Citizen Soldier (2001). He was honorably discharged on August 5, 1946 with the rank of Technical Sergeant.

Following the war and during his time as a student at North Park Theological Seminary, he was giving an internship as founding pastor of the Bretton Woods Covenant Church in Lansing, Michigan. During his pastorate he also completed his bachelor's degree at Michigan State. Starting in 1952 and for the remainder of his career, he was a professor at North Park University in the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department, during which time he completed his Ph.D. (1960). There he influenced the lives of thousands of students over his 38 years of teaching. He retired in 1990 and a few years later he and Muriel moved to Covenant Village of Golden Valley. At the Village he led the Swedish Club, Computer Club and Lucia Festival Event. He wrote extensively for the Pietisten. He enjoyed fly fishing.

Elder died November 3, 2014 in Golden Valley, Minnesota. A memorial service will be held at Covenant Village of Golden Valley on November 26, 2014, 7 PM. A burial service is being planned for the summer at Rose Hill Cemetery in Beechwood, Michigan.
