Don (97 years old) and Anne (93 years old), passed away just one day apart, on January 18, 2025, and January 17, 2025, respectively. Their enduring bond in life was reflected in their passing. Don is preceded in death by his parents Nels Theodore Gilbertson and Amy Frances Pederson; siblings, Bob Gilbertson (Mary), Arlo Gilbertson (Wanda), Lois Johnston (Donnie); brother-in-law, Orville Gjerde. Anne is preceded in death by her parents Martin Iver Thilquist and Christine Anna Eggen; sisters, Marian Oskey (Van), Ruth Walter (Jerry). They are both preceded in death by their son-in-law Ron Chaffer. Survived by their children, Deb (Craig) Erickson, Terri Chaffer, and Brian (Misty) Gilbertson, as well as their six grandchildren; Amber (Brent) DeKrey, Amy (John) Ulrich, Matthew Chaffer, Paige (Jordan) Ramler, Hailey Gilbertson, Hannah Gilbertson; two step-grandchildren Eric Chaffer (Kim Pflaumer), Jackie Chaffer (Nick Sterlacci), four great-granddaughters; Audrey DeKrey, Mackenzie DeKrey, Olivia Ulrich, Alaina Ulrich; Don's sister, Alice Gjerde; nieces, nephews, and good friends.
Don was a dedicated and accomplished individual whose life was marked by service, innovation, and a deep commitment to his community. He passed away leaving behind a legacy of kindness and faith. Don worked as a tool maker for Honeywell, where he played a pivotal role in crafting and machining parts for the space shuttle and equipment used in the Moon lander—an achievement he took immense pride in. Volunteering at Lincoln School in Minneapolis, Don also crafted adaptive equipment to support children with physical disabilities.
A charter member of St. Philip's Church, Don was deeply involved in his faith community. He participated in Bible study groups, taught confirmation classes, served as an usher, and contributed to the church work crew. In his personal life, Don found joy in woodworking, reading avidly, playing cards with neighbors, and spending cherished time with family. He had a sweet tooth for chocolate-covered peanuts and never turned down a chocolate chip cookie. Don’s life was one of purpose and generosity. His contributions to both his profession and community will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who were touched by his kindness and ingenuity.
Anne was a dedicated member of St. Philips, where she contributed significantly to the church community. She served as a charter member and was actively involved in various committees, including the Altar Guild, and the Catering Crew. Anne also prepared church bulletins and assisted in the office, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to her faith and congregation. She cherished time spent with friends and neighbors, often enjoying cookies and coffee together. Known for her hospitality, Anne loved entertaining and creating a warm, welcoming environment for those around her. Her iconic potato salad was a favorite at gatherings, showcasing her love for cooking and baking.
Anne had a passion for sewing and embroidery, crafting beautiful pieces with care and precision. She took pride in maintaining an immaculate home, reflecting her attention to detail and dedication to creating a comfortable space. Anne’s legacy is one of kindness, service, and joy shared with friends, family, and neighbors. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
Together Don and Anne created a beautiful family and a loving community. The two met ballroom dancing at the iconic St. Paul ballroom dancing hall called The Prom. Don and Anne were married for 69 years waltzing through life. During those years they spent much time entertaining, hosting for holidays, and just spending time with friends, family, and neighbors. They traveled together and often did family camping trips with Deb, Terri, and Brian. May their shared legacy bring comfort to all who knew them. In honor of their memory, memorial contributions may be made to St. Philip’s Lutheran Church (Endowment Fund).
