Diane Irene Sculthorp, age 80, of St. Anthony, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 13, 2025.
Born on October 18, 1944, in Thief River Falls, Diane was the beloved daughter of Ingvald (“Ing”) and Irene Hanson. She grew up in Moorhead, graduating from Moorhead High School before earning her degree in education from Moorhead State University. It was in Moorhead that she met the love of her life, Jim Sculthorp—a match made possible by her sister Sharon, who introduced them. They were married on December 30, 1966, and together they lovingly raised three children.
Diane—also known as Mom, Mama, Grandma, Grammie, GMA, YaYa, and Foxy (to Jim)—was a woman of warmth, wit, and quiet strength. She had a natural gift for making people feel seen and loved. While she began her career as a second-grade teacher, she later took on roles that allowed her to prioritize her family, including working overnight shifts at Deluxe as an accountant. She was deeply creative, as shown through her whimsical quilts and sticker-filled birthday cards; her kitchen famous for cookies, cheese dip, and mocha bars. Diane found joy in the simple pleasures: curling up with a good mystery novel, tackling a challenging puzzle, or exploring small-town diners and bakeries with Jim, always in search of the next delightful bite.
Although Diane lived with a rare skin condition called porphyria that made each day a new challenge, it never defined her. She faced the limitations it imposed with grace and resilience, never seeking pity and never allowing it to overshadow her zest for life. Her unwavering faith provided her with strength, and her greatest joy came from her children and grandchildren, who were the center of her world. Diane’s life was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the enduring human spirit.
Diane is survived by her children, Jennifer (Allen) Wagenius and Jeff (Stacy) Sculthorp; her son-in-law, Tim Stich; and her grandchildren, Matt Wagenius (Matt Yost), Alyssa (Henry) Dalluhn, Jonah Wagenius, Hannah Stich, Aaron Sculthorp, Alli Sculthorp, and James Sculthorp. She is also survived by her sister, Terri (Gary) Pattison; her sister-in-law, Margaret Hanson; her brother-in-law, Gary Larson; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and treasured friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ingvald and Irene; her husband, Jim Sculthorp; her daughter, Jill Stich; her siblings, Allen Hanson, Sharon Landberg, and Adele Larson; and her brother-in-law, David Landberg.
A private memorial will be held for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, please remember Diane in a way that honors your relationship with her—whether that’s baking something sweet, starting a new book, or sitting down for a puzzle with someone you love. Memorials may be made to any cause that brings you joy and makes you think of Diane’s bright spirit, or to the United Porphyrias Association.
