Byron A. Teska, M.D., FACS
Passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 24, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Byron O. & Effie Teska and ex-wife Mavis. Byron is survived by partner and wife of 35 years, Karen; children, Suzanne, Scott, Stephen and Amanda (Richard) Thomson; granddaughter, Scarlett Thomson. Byron was born in Rochester, graduated from South High School, and served in the military at Fort Warmoth and Gattoon Locks in Panama as a pharmacy technician. He earned his BA degree and later his medical degree from the University of Minnesota. Byron interned at Hennepin Co. General, began his ophthalmology residence at Mayo Clinic, and finished it at the University of Minnesota. He went into practice with world renowned strabismus surgeon, Dr. Walter Fink, and throughout his career had offices in the Medical Arts Building, Unity Professional Building, Mercy Health Care Center, Monticello, Buffalo, and finally Blaine with Minnesota Eye Consultants. He was widely respected for his thoughtfulness, ethical judgement, integrity, and exceptional surgery skills. He did the first corneal graft at the Monticello Hospital, used the first laser treatments at Mercy Hospital, preformed the first Sheie glaucoma procedure at Veterans Hospital, and was an Assistant Professor at the University where he taught Ophthalmic Pathology. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Charter Member of the Minnesota chapter charter, Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a Member the International Eye Foundation, the American Intra-Ocular Implant Society, and Rotary International. Outside of work, Byron loved to go on fishing trips and road trips with family, making countless drives across the U.S. Byron will be remembered as a devoted, loving, and committed husband, father, grandfather, and physician. Funeral Service will be held on Friday May 7 at 11:00 AM at St Philip's Lutheran Church, 6180 MN-65, Fridley, 55432. Visitation will be held an hour before the Service.
